2 Kings

2 Kings opens with Elijah's departure in a whirlwind and the continuation of Elisha's ministry, marked by everyday miracles: oil that does not run out, a floating axe head, Naaman healed in the Jordan. In parallel, both kingdoms decline. Israel in the north falls to Assyria; Judah holds out longer, with reforms under kings like Hezekiah and Josiah, but ends destroyed by Babylon — the temple burned, the city in ruins, the people deported. The book is the theological explanation of that disaster: it was not a lack of God's power, it was the abandonment of the covenant. Even so, the last paragraph carries a discreet sign of hope: an exiled king is treated kindly.
