Ezekiel

Ezekiel was a priest deported to Babylon before Jerusalem's final destruction. His book is the most visual of the prophets: it begins with the vision of a chariot with wheels and living creatures, moves through strange symbolic acts — lying on his side for months, cooking in a prescribed way, shaving his head — and reaches its two best-known images: the valley of dry bones coming back to life and the promise of a heart of flesh in place of a heart of stone. The last section describes a restored temple, measured in detail, and ends with the city's new name: "The Lord is there".
