Hosea

Hosea opens with a shocking command: marry a woman who would be unfaithful. The marriage becomes the prophetic sign of the whole book — the relationship between God and Israel, marked by broken promises on one side and persistent love on the other. The prophet's children's names are messages in themselves, later reversed into a promise of restoration. The tone swings between accusation and tenderness, with memorable images: God as one teaching a child to walk, as dew to Israel, as the one who "will heal their waywardness". It is one of the most emotionally intense books of the Old Testament and is quoted several times in the New.
