Joel

Joel starts from a concrete disaster: a locust plague that devastated the crops and even compromised the temple offerings. The prophet reads the event as a warning and calls the people to a collective fast, with a line that stuck: "tear your heart and not your garments". The second part turns to the future, with the promise of the Spirit poured out "on all flesh" — sons and daughters will prophesy, young men will see visions, old men will dream dreams. It is exactly that passage Peter quotes on the day of Pentecost, in Acts 2, to explain what was happening. It is only three chapters long.
