Zechariah

Zechariah was a contemporary of Haggai and wrote to the same discouraged community. The first part gathers eight night visions — horses, a lampstand, a flying scroll, a high priest whose filthy garments are exchanged for clean ones — with one constant message: God has not forgotten Jerusalem. From here comes the line "not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit". The second part is more poetic and contains several passages the Gospels apply to Jesus: the king who comes humble, riding on a donkey; the thirty pieces of silver; the one they pierced. It is one of the Old Testament books most quoted in the Passion narrative.
